Why you might want to get involved
As accountants and business owners, we and our clients are probably not experts in the science of environmental damage and global warming.
But as human beings, we do know that there are a lot of experts who believe that we will face real peril if we don't start making changes to address these issues.
For example, the United Nations' Millennium Ecological Assessment Report said:
"Human activity is putting such a strain on the natural functions of the Earth that the ability for the planet's ecosystems to sustain future generations can no longer be taken for granted."
Whilst we do not know for certain whether the "merchants of doom" are right in their predictions, it is almost universally accepted that there is the possibility that they are right.
So, faced with that possibility, we seem to have two options:
Ignore it - in the hope that either the predictions are wrong, or that others will find a way to deal with things without any contribution from us, or
Take responsibility and do your bit to contribute which, as you will see, has the potential to improve your profits by increasing your revenues and reducing your costs, as well as giving you the emotional rewards associated with doing something "worthy".
